EVS/HUD (EFVS) Operational Authorization and Guidance
ICAO Annex 6 Part 2 and FAA Provide Guidance for operations and Letter of Authorization (LOA).
Enhanced Vision Systems with Heads Up Display (EVS/HUD) can be used to descend below DH or MDA on certain straight-in approaches. Note, FAA uses the term Enhance Flight Vision Systems (EFVS).
Benefits of factory installed, or aftermarket systems will be to provide flight crew improved situational awareness during approaches. Additionally, there is a potential for operational credit allowing lower descent minimums for qualified approaches under specified conditions.
SPECIAL NOTICE – Operators should review the Aircraft Flight Manual AFM and Supplements for the aircraft and equipment installed before claiming operational credit or making application for an LOA.
Key elements to know:
- FAA Advisory Circular 90-106A provides guidance and means of compliance for LOA
- Authorization by State of Registry Required by ICAO for International Operators. ICAO Annex 6 Part II Section 2 Chapter 2.2
- LOA NOT required in US Airspace to 100’, but LOA needed for Touchdown & Rollout.
- EFVS operations to Touchdown and Rollout, referenced in 14 CFR 91.176(a)
- EFVS operations to 100 feet above the Touchdown Zone Elevation (TDZE), referenced in 14 CFR 91.176(b)
- Pilot Training is stipulated in 14 CFR 61.66(b)(1).
- FAA Inspectors process LOA applications using FSIMS 8900.1 Volume 4, Chapter 17, Section 1. Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EFVS) Operations.
